Financial Crisis of 2020

A contagion is tearing through the world's financial system. Overnight lending has frozen, and our largest banks are days from collapse. The bankers who caused the mess are begging for a taxpayer rescue; the public is in no mood to give them one. If the banks fall, they will take savings, mortgages and jobs down with them. Do we bail them out?

Opened 7 Oct 2020 Closed 16 Nov 2020 39 countries · 173 party votes

The choice

Option one

Bail them out

  • — The treasury guarantees the banks and the panic subsides
  • — Savers are protected — and the bankers keep their bonuses
  • — Cost: 5% of GDP for 12 months
24 of 39 countries chose this 61.5%
Option two Default if deadlocked

Let them fall

  • — No taxpayer money for the people who caused this
  • — The banks collapse and credit tightens overnight — how far the damage spreads from the trading floors, nobody can yet say
  • — National mood: Recession for 180 days, starting 14 days after the decision
  • — Industry: Financial Services growth -8 percentage points for 12 months
15 of 39 countries chose this 38.5%

“It is arguably due to the bankers’ own failures that this crisis has occurred. However, the people who feel its effects most harshly will not be the bankers or businesses, but the ordinary people for whom the economic situation is already a strain. Therefore, our decision to bail out the banks lies in a regard for human dignity and the feeling that the livelihoods of millions shouldn’t be sacrificed to prove a point to the banks.”

“This is the fault of corrupt elite networks operating on a global scale, including international organizations, who seek nothing but to steal from the people to enrich themselves and the horrific cults of greed they are members of. We call for not bailing them out and punishing all the responsible for it to discipline them into minimum financial responsibility. Along with that, we call for mass nationalization of banks and rigid control of their operations to ensure that their traditional schemes do not go uncovered.”

Voted Oct. 14, 2020

“To bail out failing financial institutions is an absolute economic necessity, not a moral reward. A collapse of our banking system would instantly annihilate the savings, homes, and livelihoods of hardworking, innocent citizens. Ideological purity is a luxury a state cannot afford when the abyss yawns before it. Order must be preserved. We intervene not to coddle reckless bankers, but to secure the bedrock of our national economy, protect public deposits, and guarantee stability. To do otherwise out of spite would plunge our entire society into catastrophic ruin!”

“The stability of the national economy cannot be sacrificed to punish the mistakes of a few financial institutions. Protecting the banking system safeguards the savings of ordinary citizens, preserves employment, and prevents a wider economic crisis. Any public support should be accompanied by strict state oversight and firm accountability for those responsible for the crisis.”

Voted Oct. 8, 2020

“While it is clear that the bankers' lack of responsibility has caused this crisis, the damage that would be caused by the total collapse of the financial sector would be too great and would have destructive consequences for the entire population and economy. For this reason, we consider the bailout necessary, but necessary measures will have to be taken after the crisis has subsided to prevent this from happening again.”

“Modern Alliance will vote to stabilise the financial system because the consequences of widespread bank failures would be borne by ordinary citizens, not just financial institutions. Families could lose their savings, businesses could lose access to credit, and thousands of jobs would be put at risk. This is not a reward for irresponsible behaviour, but an emergency measure to protect the economy and prevent a deeper recession. At the same time, we believe any public support must be accompanied by stronger oversight, greater accountability, and reforms to ensure that those who took excessive risks cannot simply return to business as usual. Taxpayers deserve both stability today and safeguards for tomorrow”

We do not believe taxpayers should reward reckless behaviour, but protecting the nation's financial stability must take priority over political symbolism. Any government assistance should come with strict conditions, including increased oversight, executive accountability, and measures to ensure those responsible bear the consequences of their actions.
