The Giant Solar Storm of 2019
Astronomers are offering a clear warning: a once-in-a-century solar storm is predicted to strike the Earth in the next six months. As with anything, nothing is unanimous. Some say they are being hysterical, others say we must prepare. Shielding transformers, satellites and data centres now would be expensive and thankless — if it works, nothing happens. Ignoring the warning is free, for six months. Do we harden the grid?
The choice
It's probably nothing
- — The forecasts have been wrong before — and hardening the grid is expensive
- — Nothing happens today — whatever the sky has in store is months away
- — Industry: Technology growth -14 percentage points for 12 months, starting 90 days after the decision

“Our party believes that spending large amounts of public money on protection against a possible solar storm is not justified. Scientists have different opinions about how severe the effects could be, and there is no clear agreement that major disruption is likely. History has shown that some widely publicised risks have ended up causing far fewer problems than expected. Instead of investing in costly preventative measures, we believe governments should monitor the situation and respond if significant issues arise. Businesses that depend on vulnerable infrastructure should also take responsibility for protecting their own equipment.”
“It is better to be safe and sorry. The economic costs of a solar storm would far outweigh anything spent to protect us here and now.”
“If the Solar Storm indeed hits Earth, we must be prepared to avoid further damage and casualties.”

Party breakdown
7 votes recorded“We deeply respect scientists' work and inputs, and would never dare not to listen to them on scientifically-proven issues such as vaccines, energy sources or environment. This is a slightly different matter though. There's no unanimity between experts, and according to many the coming solar tempest will actually do little to no damage (just like all solar tempests before). We already have egregious examples of alarmism and, in some cases, fearmongering: the Y2K craze above all. As we all know, in the end nothing happened, proving wrong many an expert: it was partly because companies prepared, but in most cases clock issues was the worst consequence we experienced. Considering all this, and the prohibitive cost of mass shieldings, ADFR believes that nothing of significance will happen, and in the event it does, ex post facto analysis and intervention are a more appropriate way to deal with it. For what concerns private goods, companies are expected to protect their own assets.”
“We cannot gamble with the infrastructure millions of people depend on every day. A major solar storm could threaten electricity, communications, hospitals, and essential public services. Even if this storm never strikes, a stronger and more resilient grid will be essential as we face increasingly extreme climate conditions and new challenges in the decades ahead. This is not wasted investment. It is preparation for the future. The cost of preparation is significant. The cost of doing nothing and being wrong would be immeasurable.”
“Since there is no consesus on whether the solar storm could cause major damages, we consider that the extraordinarily high costs for such extensive preparations are not justified, especially considering that the budget is already under temporary strain after the recently approved earthquake relief.”
“We believe that protecting Saxenheim’s infrastructure is a responsibility we cannot ignore. Our industries, communications, and essential services are the foundation of our nation, and we cannot risk leaving them vulnerable to a potential disaster. While hardening the grid will come at a cost, we believe that a strong nation prepares for the future rather than waiting for crisis to arrive. By investing now, we protect our workers”
“Well, we don't want to die, right? We HAVE to protect ourselvers. We're in great danger.”
“We cannot afford this! Its probably a hoax”
“We Cannot take risk on the infrastructures in which millions of people are depended. We believe hardening the grid would ensure the security of technology, communication, electricity and many more essential things of people in day to day life. a great country is always prepare for the worst so now let us invest in things that secures the infrastructure of saxenheim. so we support harden the grid”
