Preamble

This treaty aims to build common workers' protection, to ensure strong protections and minimised exploitation for the common good around the world. By enshrining the basic protections workers should receive through a treaty, we can effectively ensure that this should be the minimum standard and baseline.

Treaty articles

  1. 1.
    Minimum Wage Policy must be one of:
    • Basic minimum wage
    • High living wage
    • Maximum wage cap (no one may earn more than 10x the lowest-paid worker)
  2. 2.
    Maximum Working Hours must be one of:
    • 48-hour weekly maximum
    • 40-hour weekly maximum with overtime controls
    • 35-hour weekly maximum
    • Mandatory four-day work week (28 hours maximum)
  3. 3.
    Gig Economy & Platform Workers must be one of:
    • Basic protections (minimum pay, accident insurance) for gig workers
    • Gig workers classified as employees with full rights (sick pay, holiday, pensions)
    • Gig platforms banned; all work must be traditional employment contracts
  4. 4.
    Right to Strike must be one of:
    • Unrestricted right to strike, incl. solidarity action
    • Protected with a lawful ballot
  5. 5.
    Trade Union Rights must be one of:
    • Unions permitted but strikes severely limited (cooling-off periods; binding arbitration)
    • Full collective bargaining and strike rights
    • Mandatory union membership for all workers (closed shop)
    • All enterprises must be majority worker-owned cooperatives
  6. 6.
    Severance & Redundancy Pay must be one of:
    • Statutory severance for long-serving staff
    • Generous severance scaled to years of service, plus a mandatory retraining offer
    • Compulsory employer-funded redundancy insurance guaranteeing income while jobless
    • Job for life: dismissal only for gross misconduct
  7. 7.
    Workplace Safety must be one of:
    • Statutory safety standards enforced by a labour inspectorate
    • Strict standards, frequent unannounced inspections, heavy fines
    • Zero tolerance: employers criminally liable for any preventable death or injury
  8. 8.
    Zero-Hour & On-Call Contracts must be one of:
    • Permitted, but exclusivity clauses banned
    • Permitted with minimum notice and pay for cancelled shifts
    • Right to request fixed hours after 12 weeks, plus an on-call pay premium
    • Ban all unstable employment contracts
