“Modern Alliance supports this proposal, although we believe the proposed electoral cycles are shorter than ideal. In our view, elections should be frequent enough to ensure democratic accountability, but not so frequent that governments are unable to govern effectively or pursue long-term reforms. That said, the current electoral cycles are excessively long and reduce accountability to the electorate. This proposal represents a clear improvement over the existing system by giving citizens more regular opportunities to hold their elected representatives accountable and encouraging greater political engagement. While we would have preferred a more moderate reduction in the length of electoral terms, this proposal moves the country in the right direction. For these reasons, Modern Alliance votes in favour of the proposal.”

Legislatures
Proposer's case
Our electoral cycles are untennable, by decreasing the amount of time that passes, and by changing the amount of time between elections for both legislative chambers we aim to better the heatlh of our democracy. It is the only way to maintain a competetive and engaged political sphere, else we risk isolating parties and electors that wish to participate in our democracy. Additionally, this will force all members of the legislative to continue their work in a more competetive manner for the people, as they will not have the luxury to secure their tenure and remain uncompetetive in the case that one party controls the legislative; another consequence of our prolonged electoral cycle.
